EXHIBIT AT GLEESON GALLERY, MISSION DISTRICT, SAN FRANCISCO CA
Roger's photography is invariably about Place. Using the traditional modernist technique, of previsualization, Roger often visits a location many times before composing an image of that space. His previous exhibit is of black and white work photographs from his field studies in late 2012 and early 2013 in the Eastern Sierra Nevada mountains and Death Valley, California. The entire show may be seen at the Jim Gleeson Gallery. Work shown online is available in sizes up to 16"x 20" and come signed on the reverse. Matted and framed prints are signed and dated on the archival window matt and available through the gallery.
![]() White Stag, Yosemite Valley, 2013Kodak ENDURA Professional Print Yosemite rains offer the photographer a wide array of contrasts to enjoy. This poplar stag provides a dividing line between the living and the dormant. I composed this photo during a workshop with Alan Ross, who assisted Ansel Adams for many years. While the rest of the participants were enjoying a warm breakfast, I left my tent cabin at Curry Village and set up in this light rain. I think it was worth it. Available at Gleeson Gallery. | ![]() Kitchen in Manzanar, 2013Kodak ENDURA Professional Print The Memorial of the Japanese Internment Camp at Manzanar provided this kitchen recreation. The kitchen windows look out over the Sierra Nevada mountains of California. A lonely, beautiful, and desolate place. A place of vast juxtaposition. I made several exposures to capture the mountains outside the windows while maintaining the softness of the interior wood panels. Available at Gleeson Gallery. | ![]() Red Ford at Manzanar, 2013Kodak ENDURA Professional Print This 1940’s red truck, serves as physical contrast to the environment at the Manzanar Internment Camp. Thousands forcibly left homes, businesses, and family farms to be displaced to this camp on the feet of the mountains because of racial profiling and fear. I used a deep red filter when developing to gain the highlight the stark world of this isolated place. Available at Gleeson Gallery. |

![]() Reflections on Topaz, 2013Kodak ENDURA Professional Print A bird hides in the foreground of this image. I considered waiting until she had flown away, but snapped just as she was close to the surface of the lake. When developing, I debated using a red filter but instead chose a blue to calm the contrasts and accentuate the glassiness of the still water of Lake Topaz. Available at Gleeson Gallery. | ![]() Winter on Convict Lake, 2013Kodak ENDURA Professional Print I captured this image of the fleeting clouds over Convict Lake by setting my camera on the frozen surface of the lake itself. The wide angle lens and red#25 filter helped me capture this dramatic contrast between the open sky and sharp stones. Available at Gleeson Gallery. | ![]() Salt Flats in Death Valley, 2013Kodak ENDURA Professional Print Death Valley provides the photographer with a multitude of images to create. I stopped walking for about an hour and waiting for the clouds to play in the sky as I composed this composition. I used a red #25 filter when developing to help me keep my sky as dramatic and provide a stark contrast between the white salt ground and the open clear sky. Available at Gleeson Gallery. |
![]() Cathedral Beach, Yosemite, 2013Kodak ENDURA Professional Print I was photographing El Capitan close to where Ansel Adams shot a similar image when I tuned and saw this striking composition of three diamonds instead. Three triangles juxtapose the curve of the Merced River. Available at Gleeson Gallery. | ![]() Morning Dunes, Death Valley 2013Kodak ENDURA Professional Print Death Valley is a living contrast of landscapes. These dunes light up in the early morning. I chose to photograph them with a yellow filter in mind, changing the yellow/red morning light to a distinct pale white. | ![]() Study in Alabama Hills, 2013Kodak ENDURA Professional Print The Alabama Hills are a place often seen in spaghetti westerns. This image is a contrast of shapes and a study of light. The clouds wisp over the hard edges with ease. Available at Gleeson Gallery. |
![]() Valley Gate, Yosemite, 2012Kodak ENDURA Professional Print This image is shot from one of Yosemite's well-loved viewpoints. I used a red #25 filter when developing, creating high contrast between the sky and clouds, and waited for the light to peek through at the right time to form an abstract shape on the granite faces. Available at Gleeson Gallery. | ![]() Leadville, Death Valley, 2013Kodak ENDURA Professional Print Leadville is a ghost town in the middle of Death Valley. I can only imagine the crushed dreams of the people who lived in this hovel as the desert nights hit them with a terrible cold after sweltering heat baked them for hours. Available at Gleeson Gallery. | ![]() Alabama at Whitney, 2013Kodak ENDURA Professional Print Mt Whitney, the tallest mountain in the contiguous United States peeks its head above as the split stone of the Alabama Hills provides a foreground. I used an orange filter when developing to gain the maximum black without closing down my shadow detail. Available at Gleeson Gallery. |
![]() Road to PerditionKodak ENDURA Professional Print Death Valley's Leadville Ghost Town is "in the middle of nowhere." You need a good set of legs, or a 4x4 to get there. This mountain is one of many along the road to the abandoned town of missing dreams. Available at Gleeson Gallery. |
